When a horse joins the herd Forward Stride, not only do they become part of a program, they become part of our community. Royal, with her wisdom, patience, and undeniable presence, has made her presence known from day one.
Since arriving in 2020, Royal has cemented herself as an invaluable teacher across multiple programs. She approaches every job she’s asked to do with wisdom and heart. It’s no surprise why so many clients feel safe and secure with her!
A Key Addition to the Vaulting Team
Royal arrived at Forward Stride at a time of need. Our beloved vaulting horse Kevyn had undergone emergency colic surgery and we were searching for a horse to step into her role.
“Royal filled in a crucial spot in our program when we were not sure what we would do,” says Vaulting Program Coordinator Marci. “She had many admirers who were thrilled to vault on her.”
Royal has continued to play an integral role in our vaulting program. She doesn’t just follow instructions, she understands the vaulters she works with and their needs.
“Royal knows her vaulters,” Marci shares. “She picks up the correct gait when she sees them waiting in the middle next to the lungeur. When a vaulter moves up from walk to trot, she gives us the side-eye, thinking we’re wrong. Once she realizes they’ve advanced, she adjusts. She always knows who she’s working with.”
A Trusted Riding Partner
Royal is also a patient and generous partner in the Forward Stride Riding Program. Her intuitive nature and reliability make her a favorite among clients and staff.
Shannon, a Certified Therapeutic Riding Instructor and Equine Specialist at Forward Stride, recalls how Royal helped her personally:
“Royal was the first horse I rode in lessons when I came back from my traumatic brain injury. She was absolutely incredible. She gave me confidence and was patient and understanding. I felt 100% safe with her. Not only was she reliable for me, but she’s been amazing in the classes I teach. She’s intuitive, opinionated, and an incredible teacher.”
Gratitude for a Remarkable Horse
Royal’s story extends beyond the Forward Stride arena. She has been a fixture in the vaulting community for years, working with different teams and regions before finding her home with us. Bella, now an instructor at Forward Stride, first met Royal in 2018 when the mare joined her former vaulting team in Gig Harbor, WA. Their paths have crossed again, and Bella now has the privilege of teaching with Royal by her side.
“She is a steady and reliable partner for everyone she works with,” Bella shares. “The vaulting kids feel safe trying new things with her.”
Royal’s impact at Forward Stride is immeasurable. She is an incredible teacher, a kind leader, and a source of confidence for so many.
We are endlessly grateful to Tom Sayles and Cascade Vaulters for their generosity in donating her to our program. Thanks to them, Royal will continue to make an impact in the Forward Stride community.
