How Forward Stride Changed William’s Life
Every year, we highlight stories of transformation and achievement from within our community. These stories showcase not just the impact of our inclusive programming, but the strength and connection of our community. This year, we begin with William. William was just four years old when he first joined a Riding class through our partnership with Shriners Children’s Hospital. His mom Tiffany writes:
We had no idea what to expect, but after just two sessions, we began to notice a shift in his behavior. He seemed calmer, more focused, and more in tune with the world around him.
By four and a half, William began Vaulting. As parents, we were nervous. With his diagnosis of NF1 [neurofibromatosis type I] and his balance challenges, the idea of him standing or kneeling on a moving horse felt terrifying. We even had to purchase a special helmet to accommodate his unique head shape and size. William brought his communication device with him due to a speech impairment, and while he was a bit hesitant [to try Vaulting] at first, he absolutely loved it.
The next term, we decided to try Riding instead. That’s when William began working with Mackenzie. She supported him in more ways than we could have asked for—not just with strength and balance, but with speech, focus, and confidence. But when that session ended, William told us how much he missed Vaulting. So, we returned.
That winter, we took a break due to financial constraints. That’s when we truly realized how much Forward Stride had done for William. His meltdowns returned. He began falling frequently again, as his foot turned inward more often. His speech began to regress. The difference was so noticeable that we promised ourselves we’d never take a season off again.
Since then, Coach Amanda—who had already worked with him as an assistant at four and a half—has been William’s steady guide since age six. She’s been a consistent source of encouragement and care. Thanks to her and the entire Forward Stride team, William has made incredible strides. His physical therapy hours were reduced due to the strength he developed in his hips. His foot rarely turns in now. He’s built friendships. He’s found his confidence. He’s found a place where he is fully accepted and celebrated for who he is.
They see his potential. They’ve given him tools to thrive, room to grow, and the space to shine.
William lives with severe ADHD, high sensory needs, autism, and NF1. But Forward Stride doesn’t see just the challenges. They see his potential. They’ve given him tools to thrive, room to grow, and the space to shine.
We are endlessly grateful for this community—for their patience, their belief in our son, and the lasting difference they’ve made in his life.
