Discovering His Voice: Cannon’s Story

Cannon is a sweet, engaging four and a half year old boy. He first came to Forward Stride in 2024 to see Sheila, our physical therapist. Cannon lives with a rare genetic disorder that affects all aspects of his life. After finding success with physical therapy, he moved on to work with Melissa, our speech-language pathologist, to work on some speech goals, and his parents are thrilled with his progress. They write:

Our family and therapists have noticed so many wonderful changes in Cannon since [starting services at Forward Stride]. He has gained significant core strength, which has helped him sit independently, move with greater ease, and even create safer eating habits. His speech has also improved noticeably. In addition, we’ve seen his confidence grow, his startle reflex lessen, fine and gross motor skills develop, and gait pattern improve when walking. His social skills have also blossomed, and it’s clear that he feels excited to be at Forward Stride where he feels safe, loved, included, and respected.

Forward Stride has empowered Cannon in so many ways. It has helped him discover his voice, strength, and abilities. Since starting at Forward Stride, he’s become more independent and confident, and it’s been incredible to see him participate in a sport despite the challenges of his disability. He loves telling his friends at school all about riding his pony, Ellie—it’s something that brings him so much joy and pride.

Through therapy at Forward Stride, Cannon is building the skills and abilities to thrive. He is also building a community of people who care about his wellbeing, and who are eager to see him succeed. Together, they are walking the Road to Resilience.
