Here’s a bit about Erin!
How long have you been volunteering at Forward Stride and why did you start?
I think it’s been 4 years? I actually don’t remember why I started, but I know why I stayed! I felt like the vibe at Forward Stride was really different than other barns I’d been around—very community oriented and supportive. Initially I was just happy to help out and spend time with the horses, but as I’ve been here longer it’s become more meaningful for me. Horses have really helped me through some stuff in the past, and it feels good to be a little part of that for other people.
Who is your favorite horse?
Like everyone says, it’s so hard to pick a favorite, but I really love Mr. Pickles. He’s such a good-natured guy, very open and patient and fun to be around—he really puts people at ease. I also love when his feathers are clipped and he looks like he’s wearing little fur boots. <3
Do you have a hobby you love to spend time on?
Yes! I’m currently trying to write a novel, which is not something I’ve done before, so I’m learning a lot. Surprisingly there are no horses in it, but there is a little mouse who kind of reminds me of Pico.
What is one piece of advice you would give a new volunteer?
I’ve never volunteered anywhere as organized as Forward Stride, and I really appreciate all the signage and written info. My advice is to check stall cards, boards, and emails if you’re ever unsure about something—if it’s important, it’s usually written down somewhere!
