Here’s a bit about Hilary!

How long have you been volunteering at Forward Stride and why did you start?

I started in January 2025 as a horsecare volunteer and have worked my way through Leader, Sidewalker, and Herd Health duties. I really enjoy being a part of the Saturday morning crew and seeing the barn come to life each weekend.

I started volunteering in order to be close to the animals and move my body in ways it enjoys. I work remotely and look forward to walking and working with the horses throughout the week to get some exercise and sunshine! Since joining the volunteer team, I have not only learned so much about horses, but have made real connections with various folks I’ve come to know and value. I am truly grateful to be a part of the FS family.

Who is your favorite horse?

My favorite horse is my sweet girl Pippin. I have been her Herd Health volunteer since November, but I enjoyed working with her even before then. She loves her work and is so lovely with her clients. I enjoy taking her on trail walks and letting her curious mind explore the world around her. Her fiery spirit is an inspiration to us all!

Do you have a hobby you love to spend time on?

I started riding in March here at Forward Stride and it is my favorite new hobby! I am making good progress toward becoming an independent rider. Outside of horses, I enjoy playing board games, crocheting, and Pilates. I have two tuxedo cats that also take up my time.

What is one piece of advice you would give a new volunteer?

I encourage new volunteers to ask questions and be patient with themselves. I have not met anyone at Forward Stride who discourages curiosity or clarification. Give yourself time to understand the “why” behind their duties, and you will be a pro in no time!
